Community rallies together to support student-athlete's cancer treatment with charity softball

County Road 6 is home to more than just the Evergreen school district. It's the beating heart of a small but mighty Fulton County community.

And when one of their own is in need, that community steps up to the plate to help.

Evergreen baseball's senior second baseman Zach Laver was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in August of this year.

The diagnosis required immediate treatment and prevented Zach from attending school with his classmates, so members of the Evergreen Vikings baseball and softball teams came together Sunday to raise money for Zach and his family with a slow-pitch softball game.

Rock Fitness Charity helping members of community with mobility issues

This week in Community we’re taking a look at the Rock Fitness Charity that helps people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and obesity.
Steve and Lorraine Evans who run the charity use rehab, training and nutrition to help their members.
Therapy and treatment differs for every client using Rock Fitness, but Functional Electrical Stimulation, FES, is regularly used for some, including Trevor Bickerstaff, who has been in a wheelchair for the last four years since he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which affected his mobility.

The Sikh Welfare Awareness Team is serving almost twice as many meals as it used to a year ago.

Recent figures show that rough sleeping has gone up by thirty per cent across the country.

Learn about this amazing nonprofit educational facility which has been providing education to children in the seacoast for more than 56 years. They currently serve 300 children starting at age 8 weeks from 23 seacoast towns.
Melissa Caldwell, Executive Director shares how they provide full-time, after-school, vacation, and summer care for local children at their facility and in local schools. Learn who they help, the scholarships they offer (32% receive some sort of support), and where they stand post-covid. Hear about their challenges including finding staffing that could allow them to add up to two more classrooms, the difficulty of providing a "livable wage" for their staff, and how they are dealing with the increasing costs of food and other expenses. Their needs continue to grow for support and volunteers.
