The Farmer to Farmer program, run by the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute, is a peer support program that has seen success in connecting farmers with mental health resources. During the last year and a half, the institute has increased its efforts to raise awareness about farm stress and how it affects the farmers, their families and their communities.

Easy access to fresh and nutritious food can be a challenge for those living in rural communities. The High Country Food Hub in Boone connects more than 70 food producers to customers across the multicounty region. An online farmers market operated by the Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, the Hub also accepts and doubles SNAP benefits.

The North Carolina Justice Center estimates two out of five former inmates will return to prison. To help inmates find employment after release, Pamlico Community College has partnered with Pamlico Correctional Institution to offer them college-level classes. Prison education programs have been shown to reduce recidivism and help former inmates return to society and find jobs.

The ncIMPACT Initiative at the UNC School of Government (ncIMPACT) and myFutureNC, with support from the John M. Belk Endowment, are launching a two-year pilot program that supports 10 local educational attainment collaboratives across North Carolina that seek to significantly increase the number of students successfully completing post-secondary credentials of value in the workforce: a degree, credential, or certification.

This effort aligns with the state’s legislative goal of 2 million individuals between the ages of 25-44 who possess a high-quality credential or postsecondary degree by 2030.

Small farms have problems dealing with crop loss and other issues related to extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts. A recent report titled “North Carolina Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan,” predicts that increases in extreme precipitation are likely to increase inland flooding, causing further economic and agricultural losses in North Carolina.
