What's the best way to help the world? Government programs? Charity? There's something better than both.

Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. Sign up here:

Government tried to "help the poor" by spending $27 Trillion on a "war on poverty". Shortly after its "war" began, the poverty rate STOPPED falling. Why?

Government handouts teach dependence.

Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute explains: "The government creates dependence by the very fact that it sends you a check, a welfare check or food stamps... and when you get a job, you lose that status. So your checks gets smaller and smaller."

That changes behavior. One woman noted, "As soon as you start doing good, they take everything [government assistance] away from you."

Many charities are better. Groups like "WorkFaith" and the "DOE Fund" help ex-convicts get back on their feet through work.

"Every time I get my paycheck, I know that I earned that. And for the first time in my life I can say that,” said one man helped by WorkFaith.

The DOE Fund helped John Buster, who pointed out: "They don't allow you to get food stamps ... They want you to be independent."

I donate to DOE. It changes lives.

But there's an even better way to help the world.

"250 years ago, almost all of us ... were earning what the UN today defines as extreme poverty," Yaron Brook points out.

"Today only about 8%... are that poor... Why? Not because of charity, not because of foreign aid."

Millions lifted themselves out of poverty thanks to private-sector, often "greedy", innovators. Because of entrepreneurial capitalism, we now take running water, medicines, cars, telecommunication, and longer lives for granted.

Those innovators are the real heroes of the modern era. Their work is more helpful to the world than charity.

Video transcript:

Hi, I’m Richard from TurboTax with tips for charitable deductions.

One, in order for your charitable donations to qualify for a deduction, your donation must be to an organization qualified under Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code.

You can check if the organization is exempt using the Exempt Organizations Select Check Tool on

Most donations to places of worship, international relief organizations and war veterans groups are deductible. Cash, property, stock and even clothing and household items can be written off.

Two, make sure you have a canceled check, a bank record or a receipt from the charity as donations of any amount require documentation.

If you donated by phone, you can use your phone bill as proof, if it lists the name of the charity, the date and the donation amount. If your donation was for $250 or more then you will need an acknowledgement letter from the organization.

Three, know what doesn’t qualify for a tax break. Donations to civic leagues, clubs, chambers of commerce, homeowners' associations, political campaigns and lobbying groups, and most foreign organizations aren’t eligible.

If you don't know if a donation qualifies, call the charity or visit

The Fifth Estate looks closely at the history and operations of the WE Charity, its triumphs and missteps, and its relationship with the Trudeau family. The embattled co-founders of the charity, Craig and Marc Kielburger, describe themselves as "political roadkill" after the extent of their ties to Justin Trudeau’s family were revealed, months after the federal government handed them a contract worth millions of dollars. Former employees have come forward to say everything was not as it seemed inside the organization, both in Canada and in its operations overseas.

What’s the best way to help people? No, it’s not through government aid or tax-funded social programs, but private charity.

Want to know more about the policies best able to help the poor rise up out of poverty? Download FEE’s Essential Guide to Poverty and Inequality:

"71% of all contributions to charity are from private individuals. That number rises to 80% if you include all of the money the deceased have left to charities in their will!"
This last year charitable donations in the US exceeded 390 billion dollars, which is an all time high.
Roughly 70% of all money budgeted for government assistance gets spent upholding and maintaining the bureaucracies charged with the task of helping the poor. When you pay your taxes for the war on poverty, it’s more likely your money will end up in the pocket of a middle class public sector worker than with a poor person in need.
Private charities only spend 30% on infrastructure and employees, and the other 70% on the poor.
