Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). The ncIMPACT Initiative at the UNC School of Government (ncIMPACT) and myFutureNC, with support from the John M. Belk Endowment, are launching a two-year pilot program that supports 10 local educational attainment collaboratives across North Carolina that seek to significantly increase the number of students successfully completing post-secondary credentials of value in the workforce: a degree, credential, or certification.

This effort aligns with the state’s legislative goal of 2 million individuals between the ages of 25-44 who possess a high-quality credential or postsecondary degree by 2030.

Inside a Mooresville warehouse, what started as a simple soup kitchen in 1987 is now something much bigger. It's now a food bank, a food delivery service and a job training center.

Feed NC serves about 150 people daily. On average, 50 new families apply a week.

County Road 6 is home to more than just the Evergreen school district. It's the beating heart of a small but mighty Fulton County community.

And when one of their own is in need, that community steps up to the plate to help.

Evergreen baseball's senior second baseman Zach Laver was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in August of this year.

The diagnosis required immediate treatment and prevented Zach from attending school with his classmates, so members of the Evergreen Vikings baseball and softball teams came together Sunday to raise money for Zach and his family with a slow-pitch softball game.

Small farms have problems dealing with crop loss and other issues related to extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts. A recent report titled “North Carolina Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan,” predicts that increases in extreme precipitation are likely to increase inland flooding, causing further economic and agricultural losses in North Carolina.

“Voluntourism trips are largely designed to benefit the visitor — rather than the host communities — making a spectacle out of poverty and reinforcing outdated stereotypes about developing countries,” she explained. “Volunteer tourism — sometimes called voluntourism is now a multi-billion-dollar industry, with millions of people volunteering while on vacation every year.”

But is this industry all it’s cracked up to be? According to Nutt, reports from Haiti and Cambodia say that orphanages offering volunteering experiences for tourists have been accused of keeping conditions deliberately bleak so that visitors will feel compelled to give more.

Studies by child psychologists on South Africa of orphaned children exposed to ever-revolving foreigners also found that they might become overly affectionate because they constantly form bonds with people who abandon them.

“Impoverished communities around the world won’t be ‘saved’ by our volunteer labor and good intentions.” Nutt warned. “Quite the opposite. What they want, need, and deserve, more than anything else, are the tools, resources, and opportunities to learn and to do that work themselves.”

She also suggests that tourists invest in an area’s economy by buying locally when they visit, especially Caribbean nations still reeling from recent hurricanes.
