It would take him many more years to overcome his addiction, but today he runs a support group in Nash County that brings together others looking for a stronger future. ncIMPACT takes a look at the opioid crisis in rural North Carolina.

Apple has announced a new $1 billion-plus campus and engineering hub that will create thousands of high-paying jobs in the Triangle area over the next five years. State leaders say that Apple’s investments are expected to generate over $1.5 billion in economic benefits a year for North Carolina.

Government tried to "help the poor" by spending $27 Trillion on a "war on poverty". Shortly after its "war" began, the poverty rate STOPPED falling. Why?

Government handouts teach dependence.

Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute explains: "The government creates dependence by the very fact that it sends you a check, a welfare check or food stamps... and when you get a job, you lose that status. So your checks gets smaller and smaller."

That changes behavior. One woman noted, "As soon as you start doing good, they take everything [government assistance] away from you."

Many charities are better. Groups like "WorkFaith" and the "DOE Fund" help ex-convicts get back on their feet through work.

"Every time I get my paycheck, I know that I earned that. And for the first time in my life I can say that,” said one man helped by WorkFaith.

The DOE Fund helped John Buster, who pointed out: "They don't allow you to get food stamps ... They want you to be independent."

I donate to DOE. It changes lives.

But there's an even better way to help the world.

"250 years ago, almost all of us ... were earning what the UN today defines as extreme poverty," Yaron Brook points out.

"Today only about 8%... are that poor... Why? Not because of charity, not because of foreign aid."

Millions lifted themselves out of poverty thanks to private-sector, often "greedy", innovators. Because of entrepreneurial capitalism, we now take running water, medicines, cars, telecommunication, and longer lives for granted.

Those innovators are the real heroes of the modern era. Their work is more helpful to the world than charity.

On 2/15/2014, Team TFPF shed a bunch of happy tears as we finalized Miley's adoption and celebrated in her new "palace." It was a magical moment. Miley walked the red carpet, ran up and down the stairs, and was greeted by a crowd of supporters who clapped and cheered her on. Miley twirled around in the living room and pounced on squeaky toys to acknowledge her "fans." She jumped on a few beds, rolled on her back, and finally took a seat on the couch with her nurturing mom. Miley knew she was finally HOME SWEET HOME!

Miley's mom, Toni, was selected among +500 applicants, and we quickly knew she was "the one" for Miley. Together with her late-husband, she raised a total of four rescue Huskies during their 40-year blessed marriage. Her veterinarian gave us a glowing recommendation. Toni also had an army of animal-loving friends (including an actress, a former Mayor, and a reputable animal rescuer) who vouched for her as a responsible, caring pet owner. Her entire home was designed to accommodate Husky-type dogs, like Miley, who may often dig holes, escape, and exhibit prey-drive.

When we first met Toni, we, too, found her to be a warmhearted and thoughtful person. And there was an immediate, indescribable bond between Toni and Miley. During our home-check, Miley would not leave Toni's side in the backyard. She even tried to steal a croissant off the dining table. It almost seemed like they were long lost family members!

Both Toni and Miley also understood each other on a much deeper level. As Toni wrote in a letter to Miley, "It seems like we both have been broken and have a second chance at a new life..." Toni lost her beloved husband to Parkinson's disease and shortly afterwards her elderly Husky went into the light. She also suffered from breast cancer, and had to put on her suit of armor to fight and win this battle. Toni no longer needs any surgeries and is doing fantastic!

Miley also had to overcome her struggles in life. For many months, she had to survive on the mean streets of L.A. all alone, cold, and hungry. She scrounged around for food and slept on a pile of trash. She battled with severe malnutrition, bloody sores on her body, and Demodectic mange that nearly shut down her immune system. After being rescued and given months of proper care, Miley is now a healthy, happy-go-lucky dog!

Toni and Miley were clearly meant for each other. And we sincerely wish this mother-daughter duo many, many years of joy and happiness together! We also want to give our deepest gratitude to our supporters who have helped us save Miley and give her this fairy tale ending!

Black mothers and babies are dying at disproportionate rates across the country. It’s a problem that has gotten worse in the past few decades. Numbers from the World Health Organization show that maternal mortality rates more than doubled in the US from 1990 to 2013. ncIMPACT explores local solutions that are working to give black mothers a voice.

Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). Small farms have problems dealing with crop loss and other issues related to extreme weather events such as flooding and droughts. A recent report titled “North Carolina Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan,” predicts that increases in extreme precipitation are likely to increase inland flooding, causing further economic and agricultural losses in North Carolina.

Kinston community leaders say their vibrant art scene has played a big role in the revitalization of their downtown. The city has attracted dozens of artists to Kinston thanks to the “smART Kinston” initiative, which helps artists relocate to the area and provides them with affordable housing.

Learn about this amazing nonprofit educational facility which has been providing education to children in the seacoast for more than 56 years. They currently serve 300 children starting at age 8 weeks from 23 seacoast towns.
Melissa Caldwell, Executive Director shares how they provide full-time, after-school, vacation, and summer care for local children at their facility and in local schools. Learn who they help, the scholarships they offer (32% receive some sort of support), and where they stand post-covid. Hear about their challenges including finding staffing that could allow them to add up to two more classrooms, the difficulty of providing a "livable wage" for their staff, and how they are dealing with the increasing costs of food and other expenses. Their needs continue to grow for support and volunteers.
